When are the Risks Worth It?
My wife and I took a leap of faith, leaving behind everything familiar—our home, our neighbours, and the comfort of routine—to become digital nomads. This journey has been filled with risks, uncertainty, and the unknown as we navigate different time zones, cultures, and traditions.
Embracing the Toughness
It’s been tough, often exhausting. We often feel a wave of regret wash over us as we lurch from one Airbnb to another, one airport to the next, often spending just a week in each place. We’ve faced moments of deep doubt, but what has always prevailed is our love for each other and our desire to serve through our businesses. In a world that tells us to seek security in the familiar, we’ve found strength in embracing the unknown.
We look around and see so many people we work with or live beside, paralyzed by the fear of stepping out of their comfort zones. They yearn for change, progress, and authentic joy, yet they cling to the same familiar worldly ways that trap us in security, comfort, and routine.
The Reality of Our Journey
We began our businesses with the mantra: if we serve, then the financial reward will organically come. The reason I reach out, cold email, create programs, design certifications, host conferences, speak on platforms, engage in voluntary coaching charities, write articles, and host a podcast is because I fundamentally believe in the unfathomable riches of powerful leadership. Let me tell you, we have never worked harder, strived more, leaned in more determinedly, or engaged more authentically.
We’ve often shown up to meetings, consultations, and coaching sessions unsure of our next deal or secure income. Yet, we show up, fuelled by our faith in the promises of the Gospel and the joy of our actioned love. Whoever we talk to—subliminally or verbally—often tells us we’re mad, that it’s foolish or dangerous, and that we can’t earn enough money doing this.
A Counter-Cultural Identity
Yes, it’s scary, tough, draining, and uncertain. But life is more than we’re told it is; love is bigger than the world says it should be. Joy often walks hand in hand with anxiety, and trust is built by discovering weaknesses in our characters. As it says in John 10:10, "I have come that you might have life and have it to the full." For us, the fullest life is challenging, detached, free, focused, exclusively together, alone together, fearful together, and successful together.
Our lifestyle is a tough gig. It’s not all sunshine and beaches; it’s grounded in the knowledge that we are becoming something greater—not just as a couple in love or parents to our incredible daughter, but as counter-cultural thought leaders in our sectors.
Some weeks, I hear that and feel an oversized block of fear hit the pit of my stomach. We’ve slept in airports due to flight delays, faced tight budgets when clients fall through, and waited in cold hotels for meetings that get canceled. Yes, it’s scary, tough, draining, and uncertain. But life is more than we’re told it is; love is bigger than the world tells us it should be.
A Call to Action
As I look down on the earth from countless plane windows, I want to shake the tiny green planet filled with busy bees—striving, seeking, grasping, attaining, yearning, moaning, wanting, hoarding, proving—WHAT? I’m no longer sure. All I know is that there is more, and my wife and I are discovering that this “more” is not what the world thinks it is. It’s in thriving, in leadership, in love, and in recognizing that every person in every country is fundamentally the same.
Just like the same heart muscle pumps blood through our bodies and the same lungs draw in the same oxygen from the same air, we share a common humanity that transcends borders.
We are all here for more than what the world tells us.
When you meet us, whether on a platform or through our writings, remember that we want you to see the same potential within yourself. Stretch yourself, strive for something else, and don’t rest in apathy. Don’t let the fear of failure paralyse you. The time for action is now!
Together, let’s embrace the journey of discovery, understanding that what truly matters lies in connection, growth, and the courage to step into the unknown. We are all here for more than what the world tells us, and it’s time to uncover that truth together.
