Why am I finding that for so many, leadership is often treated as a checkbox to be marked off rather than a vital aspect of organisational health. They invest resources into initiatives that, while well-intentioned, serve as little more than a shiny coat of paint on a car with no engine.
Top executives and managers often feel the weight of these leadership issues. They witness disengagement, ineffective communication, and a lack of inspiration within their teams. Yet, they find themselves scrambling for solutions—promoting individuals into newly created bullshit roles, establishing 'wellness' committees, or launching 'team-building events'. It’s akin to washing and polishing a car, hoping that it will somehow revitalise the knackered engine. Spoiler alert: it won’t. You can't re-structure an organisation in to effective leadership. You can't recruit and make payroll huge in order to create effective leadership. It's a stupid as thinking that a country can be taxed in to growth. - Sound familiar?
The Misguided Pursuit of Quick Fixes
The allure of quick fixes is enticing. We are conditioned to respond to superficial changes that promise immediate satisfaction. Behavioural science tells us that packaging matters: a heavy wine bottle feels more luxurious, bright-coloured and expensive painkillers seem more effective, and a clean car feels like it drives better. However, these psychological cues do not translate into effective leadership.
True progress in leadership requires a deep understanding of what you aim to achieve. What is your organisation's vision? What do your senior leaders aspire to? What should your recruitment strategy look like? Without clarity on these points, attempts to improve leadership become mere guesswork.
The IKEA Dilemma

They might blame employee disengagement on a lack of incentives or a rigid structure rather than examining the deeper cultural issues at play. Leadership that relies on team nights or recruitment drives as a panacea is as deluded as a government that thinks easy UK welfare access will deter illegal crossings.
